What’s Next ?
In this summer, we’ll make disruptive changes in dakick.
First, we’re changing email notifications. Our members will not be notified daily or weekly anymore. People will choose when to be notified, how to be notified by themselves. People also may customize for their trackings. “If Madonna has an event, just send me an email, if Rihanna has an event send me email as soon as the tickets are available, if Lady Gaga has an event, send me a push notification via my iphone etc.”
We’re also migrating our UI to a bootstrap CSS framework with responsive flat design and that means we’re no longer use m.dakick.com.
Our iphone app will be available in mid-June and it’ll be great for both US and Turkish market.
We’ll give more control to our members (create lists, add photo, add quote, add event etc.)
and we’ll test lots of things during summer.
keep calm and follow dakick :)
What ‘re we working on right now ?
Let’s talk about some numbers! Right now, we’ve 158 issues to be solved in dakick. These numbers are the proof and motivation of going forward. New issues will come and they’ll never end but every passing minute, we’ll be better than past!
Keep calm and listen your customers!

Lack of meta tags for local search
While developing dakick.com and working with semantic.dakick.com , we have discovered many things (and many of them will be covered in another article). One thing we would like to mention in this blog post is “lack of meta tags to ping search engines for local search”
One method is ICBM method but it’s not supported by Google.
Why we needed ? Event data is a great opportunity for local search. When someone in Izmir search for “concert weekend”, the search engines should list the concerts happening in weekend at Izmir.
Our proposal is defining URLs in webmaster tools so that search engines will index accordingly.
dakick.com/izmir/* —-> Izmir, Turkey
dakick.com/Ankara/* —> Ankara, Turkey
using Dublin Core Elements or ICBM method can be great for both local searchers and sites like us.
Launch of subscription based mobile packages with Avea
In the last four months, we’ve covered iPhone and Android with our mobile site and applications. However, smartphone penetration is not huge in Turkey. We just launched our subscription based mobile packages with Avea. Now, people in Istanbul can subscribe to those mobile packages and get daily and weekly concert recommendations.
We redesigned our movie indexes.
We redesigned our movies pages with year, genre, list breakdown. This will make discovery more easier.
Why we left FB comments
As of today, we left fb comments and we’ll close them in two weeks.
We’ve two observations about fb comments. First, it’s not loading fast in the client. It’s bad for user experience and page load. Second, it’s not good for SEO (Since it’s iframe) (There are some methods to boost fb comments but they’re all waste of time)
We created our own comments module it’s now live! Just mention and hashtaging is not available. They’ll be available soon. You may mention about your friend and mention about a movie or an artist in your comment and it’ll automatically linkable.
We’ll share the difference in the upcoming weeks.
Our gamification test is ended well! The problem we have was “not so many people rated movies in dakick” and we’re thinking of ways to increase the numbers.
Since we’re in Academy Award Ceremony period last week, we have created an Oscar Awarded Movies list and asked our members “How many of them you watched ? Rate it and see how many of your friends watched and also see your ranking in top list”.
It was not just a top list, social side was the most important part. “Your friend Ayse watched this awarded movie, you haven’t watched yet ?Shame on you :)” idea was so PROVOCATIVE that people sometimes just finished the list to see which of your friends awarded which movies!
The gamification campaign ended well. The benefits of this campaign:
- In 9 days, the number of ratings for movies increased 160%.
- Many of our new members learnt how to rate a movie. Number of rates increased 95%.
- Rating and friendship is important part of our recommendation engine, increase of number of ratings helped our rec. engine works better.
- The number of pages and visits increased %140 in two days last week.
- We have just spent $30 for a promotinal facebook post for this campaign!
We’ll try new gamification tools soon :)
We’ve just launched our interest graph. Attendance to events, likes, rates are all used for people search. People with common interests now can find themselves. There’re some things to do but it’s a good start for us.
Just check it out via dakick interest graph *
*: if you’re not logged in, you’ll just see a simple search ;)
We’ve just implemented “attending” action for facebook. Before that, “track” and “rate” actions were active.
